Small Business Strategy: 10 trends to Watch

Originally written by Brian Solis for Social Media Today. You can find the original article here.
As you read this, the business landscape is shifting right under your company’s foundation. How customers make decisions, how they discover, communicate, and share, how they influence and are influenced, is evolving considerably. In fact, customer behavior is not only changing, it’s fragmenting and opening the door to new touch points. Your business will now have to compete for the customers you know and additionally, a new breed of customers that you need to know. And, to earn their attention and ultimately their loyalty, you will need to better understand the top technology trends and how they’re impacting customer behavior.
At the heart of this customer divide is technology. But this isn’t about the technology we once knew, such as PCs, laptops, iPods, ebook readers, DVRs, etc. This change in consumerism is the inevitable result of disruptive technology and how it has affected behavior and reshaped expectations. Smart phones, social networks, apps, gamified everything, Google Glasses, self-driving cars, smart appliances, the list goes on, are placing consumers at the center of their own universe connected to one another through shared experiences. These plugged-in and always-on customers are learning to see the world differently. They’re empowered and they’re entitled. As a result, disruptive technology is grooming customers to expect information and opportunities to find them.
Everything starts with surveying the landscape for how you reach customers today and how their behavior and expectations are shifting. But this is also about the people you don’t reach now. This research will help understand how to appeal to a new type of customer as well.
If you thought that having a social media strategy and presences in the most popular social networks was enough, think again. What of adding social buttons to your website or in your email blasts? Still not enough? How about developing apps for iPhone and Android platforms? Nope. That’s not the right approach.
It takes research to truly understand how customer segmentation is materializing and how new technologies introduce opportunities to engage effectively with each group. More importantly, it takes interpretation, strategy, and a culture of innovation to recognize and prioritize these new opportunities and execute against them while windows for engagement are open.
Just like customer service, sales, and marketing, technology and your ability to translate trends into opportunities, are now part of your everyday business strategy. To what extent disruptive technology impacts your customer landscape, differs from industry to industry and it is your research that reveals where to concentrate and balance your focus and investments. To help, I’ve assembled a list of 10 current trends to evaluate . But, this is just the beginning. Use this list to build a regiment of research and innovation within your business now and over time.
10 trends to review for opportunities…
1. Social Networks from Facebook to Twitter to Google+ and how they’re connecting to influencers and businesses (note: pay attention to nicheworks as well such as Path and Instagram.)
2. Geolocation check-in services such as Foursquare and Facebook location updates to share locations and earn rewards or opportunities for discounts
3. Crowdsourced discounts and deals including Groupon and LivingSocial and what’s valued and why
4. Social commerce services like Shopkick and Armadealo and how they create personalized experiences that are worth sharing
5. Referral based solutions like Yelp, Service Magic, and Angie’s List to make informed decisions and how shared experiences can improve your business, products, and services
6. Gamification platforms such as Badgeville and Fangager, and why rewarding engagement improves commerce and loyalty
7. How your consumers using mobile devices today and what apps they’re installing. Also, how they’re comparing options, reviewing experiences and making decisions while mobile?
8. The online presence your business produces across a variety of platforms such as tablets, smartphones, laptops and desktops. You must realize how consumers are experiencing the online presences you create and whether or not they deliver a holistic and optimized experience for each platform.
9. The consumer clickpath based on the platform consumers are using. Are you steering experiences based on the expectations of your customers? And are you taking into consideration the device or network where the clickpath begins and ends? Are you integrating Facebook F-commerce and m-commerce into the journey?
10. The expectations of connected consumers, what they value in each channel and platform, where they engage and how your business can improve experiences and make them worthy of sharing.
What would you add?
No company is too big to fail or too small to succeed. Simply knowing your customer is one thing. The connected customers does not replace your traditional customer, they simply introduce new opportunities to grow your business. How you’re marketing, selling, and servicing customers today are in many ways missing these important customers and thus limiting your ability for engagement and growth.
Understanding how connected customers make decisions informs more meaning strategies and ultimately effective and engaging programs, products, and services. Now more than ever, the future of business isn’t created, it’s co-created.

Best of All Worlds; new Invite-Only network

One of the pioneering figures of social media, the little known Swedish Count Erik Wachtmesiter, is back to launch his latest creation, Best of All Worlds.

The new site, which is expected to launch on the 27th August, will be highly exclusive and cater to the more elite levels of society. Naturally the site is invite-only at the moment, claiming around 25,000 members through the 5,000 invitations Wachtmeister initially issued. It is expected to continue in this vain as the network revolves around this exclusivity and seeks to unite the wealthy community pinpointed by Wachtmeister, providing a service that can really support their needs.

Speaking about the network, Wachtmesiter has claimed that Best of All Worlds will “deliver clever filters, cut through the mess and get information that’s relevant and we can trust”. The ‘About’ section of the site continues this view by stating the purpose of the site to be; to ‘discover people, common passions, and compelling information… in worlds of shared interests and friends’. Subsequently, Best of All Worlds will most certainly appeal to high-end marketers delivering such products as ‘yachts, watches, wine and liquor’.

Another potential selling point of the network is Wachtmeisters aim to allow users increased control over their data. In a move which appears to try and draw people away from LinkedIn and Facebook, Best of All Worlds offers the user ‘five modes to switch between’. These modes are entitled private, professional, family, social and party. After the user has picked their preferred mode, each one then provides its own set of photos, links, recommendations and suggestions. The idea is that this will enable like-minded people to connect in a ‘trusted environment’ and be able to discuss what really interests them. The categories of these discussions include ‘business, food and wine, health or a better world’, but this is expected to soon expand.

A Small World

Back in 2004 Erik Wachtmesiter launched his first social network A Small World. Sharing many similarities with his latest creation, A Small World is an ‘invitation-only website that catered to a wealthy crowd where users could meet other world travellers, make business connections and find services’. After selling a significant stake of the business in 2009 and quitting his post, it seems Wachtmeister is fully focused on Best of All Worlds now. It appears that the Count has picked and streamlined the most successful elements of A Small World and can utilise the near 800,000 user base to promote his new venture. Reports have viewed this as an attempt to ‘poach’ users and this was extended when the two sites shared their mobile app launch on the 27th July. According to Wachtmeister this was a “total coincidence”, but these events do suggest the Count should be careful In the future.

The potential competition between the two sites will be interesting to observe in the coming months and also whether Best of All Worlds can tempt the so-called ‘jet-setters and well-heeled away from Facebook Inc. and LinkedIn’. This should indicate whether the demand is actually present among these elite groups.

5 Tips on Becoming a Successful Internet Marketer

The internet is loaded with Internet Income Opportunities that you haven’t even heard of. And you’re obviously making a pass on every internet opportunity without even knowing it. It’s not a crime, of course but it’s a mistake you shouldn’t think of committing again. While it’s okay to do so, don’t make it a habit to let Internet Income Opportunities pass you by every now and then while wishing to earn more than what your day job can offer. That’s not going to happen.

To make sure that you’re getting more out of the product of your sweat and blood you need to stick to the essentials of internet marketing. As a professional, you should know that nothing beats the essential. So you’d better learn them as fast and as early as now.

It is not a day dream to think that you can potentially earn big income online. You’re actually day dreaming if you don’t know that you can. To start with, the internet is a free flowing stream of different Internet Income Opportunities in and out of your country. Unfortunately, the obstacle you need to face in this type of business is that some great internet opportunities may not be offered globally. But hey, that shouldn’t stop you from earning even a little extra, right?

Anyway, while you’re at it, here’s the 5 essential tips you should follow (seriously) to become a successful internet marketer.

5. Don’t give up – Most people will give this advise at the end of everything they’ve convinced you of doing. But the thing is, giving up is mostly seen at the beginning of a goal. If you can’t bounce back from the first try or is too discouraged to even try again then that’s giving up. Don’t even do it! The point is, you need to start again from the beginning not from were you’ve stumbled. Why? Because it is essential to know what mistake you’ve made from the beginning which caused your fall. Start over if you must, change your strategy and approach but never give up.

4. Learn and Relearn the basics – Think you’re too good to relearn the basics? Think again! If in the beginning you misunderstood the basics of doing things then you’re sure to fail the next time you take a step. So when you fail, go back to the beginning and study your mistake.

3. Update – If you’ve been in the internet business for a while, you know how important updating is. If you want the traffic to thicken in your website then you’d better make sure that your contents are current and up to date.

2. Advertise – Make yourself known to social networks. This is a great way to promote yourself aside form using catchy titles to grab the attention of audiences. Social networks are alive 24/7, 365 days a year and the best part is that social networks are internationally known. Make use of this tool to let people from different parts of the globe know what you are offering.

1. Improve and Evaluate – Always make room for improvement. Evaluate if you must but most of all, make sure that as the time and season changes so does your versatility to the cyber world.

So there you have it.

What makes these tips important is the fact that they are easily forgotten. They are simple that’s why they are often underestimated by most professionals, which shouldn’t be the case. Little did you know that once you master these, they surely won’t let your business down the drain. Follow these and the next time you open your email, you’ll be reading mails sales and traffic on your site and other Internet Income Opportunities coming your way.

Extra Income through Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate Marketing is the fastest growing industry on the Internet today. Extra Income made through this channel runs into billions of dollars yearly. Many people get involved in it without a solid plan for success. Indeed, many want to earn extra income using affiliate marketing, albeit without a real base plan, which is the most important reason for most being unsuccessful at it. Do you really look at any earning without understanding or planning the future of any business, be it at work or at earning extra income?

Don not be under any misconceptions, though affiliate marketing is an easy and entertaining way to earn extra income, it is serious work, and just like any other job that requires effort, perseverance, and above all, a clear line of sight and plan of action from start to finish line.

Small things like setting up your home office properly, getting up to date on know-how, setting achievable goals, making people connections, and investment in your business will ensure that you are one-up on your competition, and also make sure that you firmly stand over them.

Home Office Setup

The most important step to take before becoming an affiliate marketer is to set up your base – little home office you’ve always wanted.

You can find many resources on the internet about ergonomic design. Ergonomic because anyone intending to spend a major amount of time working on their computers need space which promotes good posture at the same time takes care of safety issues involving their office workspace.

Learning the Trade

Nobody gets into work untrained. Even when you applied for your first job, you had made sure that you are qualified and can do justice to it. Putting in a nutshell, no one hires you for giving you a free extra income without basic training.

What you need then, is to get some training on how to become a professional affiliate marketer. You can start by finding another one and check what they can do to help you. There are many professional affiliate marketers already earning a substantial extra income, who would be willing to teach you by passing o their knowledge so that you can augment the extra income they are already earning. The internet also offers a lot of resources and conference time tables which you can attend to learn.

The secret is to become a student of your own business; you will get to learn something new day after day. Now you are ready to begin by setting some realistic goals for yourself.

Goals

The major problem that plagues most affiliate marketers is that they tend to set themselves unrealistic goals by being over confident about their skills and plans. This results in becoming disenchanted very quickly due to non attainment of goals. Being realistic removes a lot of pain in this context. For example a goal of $5,000 a month realistically attainable, but a first time affiliate marketer is not likely to attain it when starting up.

When is the Best Time to Create Great Content?

There is a lot of information on creating content. You know the really good stuff that gets shared almost instantaneously, loaded with tons of good value and information that people relate to and put into good use.

When is the best time to get this content together? Do you force getting the information or do you wait till those creative inspirational moment hit?

I really don’t know. I guess the best answer would be what ever is working for you. For some it may be the first thing in the morning while drinking a cup of coffee when those great ideas pop in their heads. For others it could be after reading a good book or getting inspired by an awesome blog post.

The deal is that anytime is a good time to get some fantastic content out there. It all depends on what works. There are days you could have a complete blank, an empty canvas and no paint to paint pictures with. It happens.

Here are some ideas that can help when you are face with that type of day. How do I come up with content you may ask yourself? Are you almost stressing yourself out to get going but you still pulling a blank?

I am here to tell you don’t beat yourself up first of all because that will only hinder your progress. What I like to do when thinking of getting content together is to reflect on what I’ve learn. If it is something of value and I could put it in writing and convey a great message on how to implement it then I would work on that. You could also talk about what inspires you. I love to read inspirational content. It gets me focused.

Another thing you could do is read. It’s like killing to birds with one stone with just reading. One you are educating yourself and secondly you are gathering information for your content that you’re thinking of putting out. Think about it we are in a business that we need to read, educate, and share content to improve ourselves, build our business and help others build theirs business as well.

It’s the whole concept of networking. Regardless of the mlm your in you are going to have to filter content to your down line, prospects, and peers. Now during the process of gathering content and putting out content your own great ideas are developed, implemented and perhaps you could have a phenomenal organization created like mlsp.

Here you have a group of guys that got together and put all their knowledge, content and skills together and developed one of the most outstanding marketing platforms ever thought of.

So when is the best time to create content? I would definitely have to say right now! You just can’t sit around and wait for it and hope osmosis kicks in. You have to go out there and get it. The funny thing is that you already have it; you just have to figure out how to share it.

I just want to ask, when do you find yourself creating awesome content?
Is it in the morning after a cup of coffee or after a nice jog or some exercise?
In the evening after everything is quiet and settled down?

Online Marketing Strategy for Newbies – 4 Steps to Success

One of the most difficult parts of starting any business is knowing where to begin. With all of the different ways you can find to start just taking your first step can be daunting. In the case of building an internet business through online marketing you can get caught in a trap of failure right from the beginning because it’s so hard to figure out how to do it the right way from the start.

To break down the process lets take a step back and look at the problem as a whole and then narrow down from there. In my opinion the best place to get your feet wet is with affiliate marketing. You can sell someone else’s product so you don’t have to create one yourself right away and the commissions are usually more or equal to the profit made by the creator.

A great way to begin affiliate marketing is by setting up little streams of traffic pulling strategies to direct people to the squeeze page of the product. By setting up these little systems in multiple places you can start making money from home on autopilot. It can be broken down into only a few simple steps:

1. First you must generate consistent free traffic that is targeted to a certain demographic range. This can be done through article marketing or creating compelling video content and submitting it to websites like YouTube.com. The articles can be submitted to hundreds of article directories and all of these sources create backlinks that will increase your search engine rankings.

2. Once you start getting interest in your articles and videos, you then direct that traffic to your affiliate programs. Try to find products that have a high conversion ratio – that is the percentage of people who make a purchase out of the entire number of visitors.

3. As you go through this process you want to use the system to build your own list of interested prospects. Even if they don’t buy directly from the affiliate product squeeze page you should try to gather email addresses from these visitors. If you can get an email address from them you may be able to send them information about another product that they would be interested in.

4. This is how your new marketing system will work to generate income for you for years to come. The best part is that you can automate this process, once you have it set up it can become a passive income source.

The key to making successful online income streams from home is by doing something that works and implementing it over and over again in a way that is automated. In this way of marketing the traffic methods are even free. If you want to start looking for a program to follow you need to be careful, there are a lot of outdated and poorly created online marketing systems.

This article provides a rough outline of a solid marketing strategy, but you need more specific details on how to implement it. The most exiting part of working a system like this is you mostly just have to invest your time and you can generate real results from that time for years to come. That’s the best way to make money online. Creating simple but super powerful systems that once they are set up they are ready to run forever.

Benefits of Home Business

Running an online home business has many benefits. If you are considering researching home business ideas, here are a few of the positive things about starting a home business online.
- An online home business is very easy to start. Previously if you were to start a home business it would involve a lot of planning and work to get your business successfully off the ground.
Nowadays, with the internet that is no longer the case, as anyone with an internet connection can start an online home business.
Affiliate marketing is a good example of how easy it is to start an online business. You can join an affiliate program and be promoting your product online literally in a few minutes.
- The start-up costs are very low. It is not going to cost you much money at all, although costs will vary depending on the type of home business you start.
Affiliate programs are free to join and many residual income opportunities will cost you less than $100 to get started. If you choose to do other things like article writing or blog posting these will not cost you any money at all.
- You can outsource what you can’t do yourself. If you are new to working online you will not yet have mastered the internet marketing skills required to promote a business. But you don’t have to worry about that as it is easy to find people to do things for you at a reasonable price.
Fiverr is a great website where you can hire people for five dollars per project and Easy Outsource and Odesk are other websites where you can hire employees.
- You have the opportunity to earn unlimited income. Your goal no doubt is to make as much money as you can.
You know exactly what your monthly salary is when you have a job and this makes it easier to budget and plan your life, however, it does not make is easy to achieve your dreams.
With an online home business you can make as much money as you want. Once you are making money with your first website you can then increase your income by starting another one and so on. There is no limit to what you can do online.
Consider working with people to make money through joint ventures as well as earning off the efforts of others with network marketing opportunities.
- You don’t need high skill levels. To start and run a successful online home business does not mean that you need to have a college education
Whilst you will need to master some internet marketing skills to drive traffic to your site, anyone can learn these if they are prepared to spend the time working at it.
The above a just some of the many benefits of having an online home business. It is very easy and cheap to start an online business from home and with work can be very profitable.

Improving Traffic After Googles Panda Update

The recent Google Panda update has raised the bar not only for SEO experts but also for web designers. It’s getting tougher and tougher to rank well and that means that you really have to pay attention to all designing and Google ranking factors. When we do this, search engines rewards us because we are rewarding our audience and providing them with the information and experience they are looking for. The following points will help you to make your website panda proof:-

1.Content is key:The Panda algorithm update emphasizes providing assurance only on websites that contain unique and useful content. This will help users better find content relevant to their search. If you provide web page content that is unique, relevant, high quality and preferably 1000+ words, your site will likely be rewarded with improved rankings and therefore, increased traffic.

2.Above the fold design: Narrowing your header images, removing header banner images and pushing more content onto the top of your site will help with Panda.

3.Web Page indexing: A website with more than 100 web pages and maximum pages indexed by Google would be considered as a Panda friendly website.

4.Page rank: Page rank is still one of the most important factors. PageRank is an independent measure of Google’s perception of the quality/authority/credibility of an individual web page. It does not depend on any particular search phrase. Google conveniently reports this as a number from 0-10 (10 being the best).

5.Check your Domain registration: Domain registration for five years helps to enhance authority points. This is a small tip, but every little bit helps.

6.Webmaster tools: It enables webmasters to get a better idea of what Google “thinks” about their web sites, how the Google “spider” sees them, and what improvements could be made.

7.Social media proof: Google Panda takes social media trends seriously and content that is loved by social media sites like Twitter and Facebook gets better position in search engines.

8.Optimize for Fast Load Times: Avoid flash, single background images in the website. Google tends to favor sites that are snappy, quick, and fast.

Don't get Scammed with Online Business!

The Internet offers you many opportunities to start a business and make some extra money. If you set things up properly, you can not only have a side business which will put a little bit of extra cash in your pocket, you can have a full-time business that will quickly surpass the amount of money that you’re making at your job. Of course, it does require that you approach it in the proper way and that you treat it like a business, from start to finish. That being said, here is how to start a small business online to make some extra money and to get your feet wet in the online marketplace.
Although you certainly do have many different options available to you as to how to reach your customers, one of the easiest things that you can do is to use an online marketplace that is already established. One of the more popular of such marketplaces is eBay. It is possible for you to make money by using this auction website if you set things up properly. As a matter of fact, there are many people who earn their full-time living on eBay and they continue to grow their business in some rather unique ways.
That isn’t to say, however, that the only thing that is necessary to start an eBay business is to find things in your garage that are no longer wanted. Yes, it is possible for you to sell those items to get a little bit of cash flow going but eventually, you’re going to run out of things to sell. What do you do when you reach that position and find that you can continue to sell but you’re out of products? That is where you turn to wholesalers, drop shippers and others that can warehouse the products for you and ship them once you make the sale.
As a matter of fact, people are using the drop shipping technique to sell on eBay and other online websites each and every day. It is something that can help you be successful very quickly and once you get started, you would be surprised with how far you are able to take it. You do need to have a business license to get connected with the legitimate drop shipping companies and you will need to establish a relationship with them so that it is mutually beneficial.
As your business continues to grow online, you will find that there are many things that can be done which will assist you in being successful. One of the most important things for you to consider, however, is that you must treat your customers like gold. This is not only true on auction websites where they are able to give immediate feedback but it is true, regardless of where you are selling. If you treat your customers properly, they will recommend you and you will get a reputation that will help to drive your business well into the future.

Driving Traffic to your Blog or Site - Jargon Free!

In today's uber-competitive and ever-growing online business industry, getting traffic to your site can mean the difference between having your company flop so hard that you lose everything, or, quite conversely - having it blossom and potentially gaining a host of new clients!

So the first step is simple (assuming you've already got your business a webpage of it's own).
You advertise it.
Now I don't mean spam other businesses or your Facebook friends with links saying 'click this, click this!'. I think we can all agree that's just bad etiquette. Instead, it's good to start by finding other similar businesses or blogs online within your niche or expertise. Do they have a forum? Do they allow comments on their page?
If so - why not read what others in your business area are talking about, and what the latest news is within your niche? Engage others and maybe have a discussion on your opinions and feelings on whatever topic it is that you're talking about. Most forums and blogs that allow you to comment have a simple set-up when you write your post. They'll ask for your name, your e-mail address and then they'll ask (and this is the important bit) for your website. This is where the magic happens. You will link back to your website here, and then others can choose to click that link if they wish. This is called 'Back-linking'.

Back-linking plays a very important role in online business; especially if you're running a business from home or utilising a blogging platform (which I assume you are, since you're reading my blog right now).
I won't go into the small and frivolous details of it, but the reason you'll want to back-link is because of something called 'SEO' (Search Engine Optimisation).
What SEO means, for you - is that search engines, such as Google or Bing will check your website every day, and automatically check how many back links your site has leading to it (from other sites or forums) and put simply - the more back-links you have; the higher your website will rank when people search for whatever business it is you run.

For example, say you're running a home business like I am, and that your business sells stationary to other businesses or individuals. If you've been commenting and posting on other websites, linking your own - then Google will see this and put you higher up on the search page every time somebody searches for 'Home stationary company' or 'Home business stationary' and other combinations of whatever it that your business site is about.

So remember, the key to getting views on your site - which in turn mean more customers or clients, is first finding other similar businesses and engaging people that are interested in your niche.

Twitter Radio

Video killed the radio star, but now it seems radio's been resurrected in the form of 'The Social Radio'.

The social radio is a brand new app available for android and iphone that links to your twitter account and will read out your updates from your twitter feed in a robotic voice (male or female, depending on your choice) . This means you can now stay informed on all the latest news in situations that, before now, made it impossible to sneak a glance at your smartphone. You can now stick on a pair of headphones, walk down a busy street and not have to bump into everyone as a voice reads out your timeline, trending topics and search results. As well as being able to drive your car, do the dishes or mow the lawn you'll be safe in the knowledge that you're staying in the know, thanks to this new audio advancement.

The app also allows you to listen to your music at the same time and can translate foreign tweets into english. The potential for this app makes it a must have for anyone wanting to stay abreast in the field of social media.

On a side note however, you may be tempted to reevalutate who you're following, you don't want to be in a meeting when suddenly the boss's big speech is interrupted by a voice announcing to the room "I love shopping! tweets Paris Hilton". Awkward!
